It is in winter that people often discuss astronomy in general and the Christmas star in particular. I realize not everyone is aware of research that has taken place to find the Christmas star. Many do not realize research using NASA astronomy computer programs has proven the star's existence. The story of the Christmas star appearing as written in the Bible is, therefore, fact.
If you have not read the book, UNRAVELING THE CHRISTMAS STAR MYSTERY, you should do so to gain knowledge of that specific astronomy event.
The research was completed using NASA astronomy software sent to me by the Educator Resource Center, Space Center Houston, National Aeronautics & Space Administration. Over sixty astronomy programs they sent me were used in the time consuming search for the Christmas star. Search parameters included geographical latitude and longitude of the current Bethlehem of Judea and dawn, the time of day astronomers of 2,000 years ago made their daily astronomical observations. About 15-years of ancient skies were surveyed.
Knowing positions of objects in the sky (stars, Moon, Sun and Planets) would not give enough information to determine which significant event created the star acting as a global positioning star for the search. Ancient. Questions had to be answered such as:
1. How did the ancient astronomers and astrologers interpret the symbols of what they saw in the sky?
2. What was symbolic to them?
3. Why would they use the event of a celestial happening to predict the birth of the most powerful God in their universe?
During my studies of almost 100-books about ancient history, archeology and art, I learned astronomers of 2,000-years ago used dawn as the time of day for their celestial observations. This was an important fact. Researchers in past years mistakenly used evening stars for their searches. Consequently none found the Christmas Star.
My searches used six o'clock in the morning local Bethlehem time.
Ancient skywatchers could be called "astronomers" in that they scientifically studied what they could see beyond Earth. They used mathematics to do so. The Babylonians of 4,000-years ago invented the fraction, degrees, and used a decimal system based on 60. That's why there are 360-degrees in a circle, 60 minutes in an hour, 60-seconds in a minute, etc. Every time you look at a watch to know the time of day, you are using Babylonian mathematics. These mathematical units and symbols were used for the next 2,000-years to the time of Jesus Christ. Using mathematics, astronomers of Christ's time were able to accurately measure everything that happened in their dawning sky. With motions of celestial objects so precise, ancient astronomers could predict years in advance what was going to happen.
It was fortunate they had that mathematical talent. By predicting the Christmas star event years in advance, there was adequate time to prepare caravans and entourages for the oversea and/or overland trips to Bethlehem. The preparation must have taken months. The actual trips may have also taken a great deal of time, depending upon where they originated. We know there were at least three distinguished visitors/entourages to the birth of Christ. There may have been more.
Since they believed positions of objects in the sky influenced humankind, ancient skywatchers were also called "astrologers." Present day humans still use Babylonian symbolic meanings and interpretations of the movements of the stars, planets, Moon and the Sun. Daily newspapers show evidence such symbolic interpretations by publishing daily horoscopes. Professional present day astrologers interpret meanings of celestial movements for their patrons and customers. The ancient skywatchers who determined the birth of Jesus Christ was the birth of a great God were both astronomers (for their mathematical skills) and astrologers because of their use of symbols and symbolic meanings for every object in space. Venus had over a thousand symbolic meanings depending upon its position, movements of objects near it, and what it looked like.
Please be aware that the ancients thought every object in the dawning sky was a god. Different meanings were attributed to objects. The brighter the objects, the more importance they held. Most important was the Sun. Next were the Moon, Venus, Saturn, and Mars. It was movements of these objects that told the ancient astronomers/astrologers who was going to be born, what attributes that God would have, and where the birth would take place. These skywatchers did not know the difference between planets and stars. If you went outside tonight or before dawn, could you distinguish between stars and planets? Most persons could not. What we call an advent or Christmas star was in reality, a planet.
To the Greeks and Romans, the Christmas star planet was considered to be the father of the Olympian gods and the god of agriculture, associated with the planting and sowing of seed and harvest and thus a fertility god. It was considered the bull of the heavens and ruled Saturdays. It was the protector of the Jewish people and the youngest Titan. Practical and wise, this star god was linked with politics and friendships. To have been born when it was present in the sky with Jupiter was interpreted that the child would become a genius and create a steadying influence. The Babylonians gave it names of "Ninib," "Niurta," and "Kaimann." In Greece it was known as "Kronos." In Egypt it was known as "Horus" with a falcon head topped with bull horns. In Rome it was called Saturn.
